Throughout the country, many high rises are going green, literally. Green roofs are being set up in Chicago, and maybe one day in Lexington. Environmentally friendly materials or solar panels aren't what these types of roofs are made from. Here, you can plant everything from wildflowers to herbs.

For ages, potted plants have dressed up rootops, but this new kind of roofing allows for plants to actually root and comes complete with a unique drainage system. Green roofing allows for a lot of benefits. Above all, cooling needs are reduced by approximately 25 percent, diminishing the greenhouse effect. Plants can absorb the heat generated from concrete and blacktop.

A flat, black roof is less tasteful than a rooftop garden. Whether you grow grass, flowers, or brush, you can have a spot to stop and smell the roses. Keep an eye out for Lexington homes going green. For now, green roofing can be found only in the big city.
